Participatory Planning

From worst-case scenario to participatory plan:Lessons from a Mexican village for community development and planning education

Posted on October 15, 2016October 19, 2016 by North Lawndale Community Coordinating Council

Marie Kennedy, Professor Emerita of Community Planning, University of Massachusetts Boston, provides the context for the research project.

The UIC-Great Cities Institute recently sponsored a presentation and discussion of the results of a research project conducted by Marie Kennedy,Professor Emerita of Community Planning, University of Massachusetts Boston; Chris Tilly, Professor of Urban Planning, University of California Los Angeles with Mercedes Arce, Professor of Communication & Culture, Universidad Autónoma de la Ciudad de México. Kennedy and Tilly shared lessons learned and challenges working to create a participatory planning process in San Miguel Analco, a small agricultural village in Natívitas municipio.

Theresa Cordova, Marie Kennedy and Chris Tilly listen to comments and entertain questions from a standing-room-only lunchtime crowd at the Great Cities Institute.

The issues raised and approaches used in this case study are instructive for local residents, elected officials and community development professionals around the world.  This presentation is especially timely for us in North Lawndale, as we prepare for the second phase of our planning process.

We thank Dr. Theresa Cordova, Director of the UIC Great Cities Institute, for hosting the event, and Dr. Marie Kennedy for sharing the presentation so more people can have access to the lessons learned. Enjoy, and feel free to comment.
