Don’t Miss These Upcoming NLCCC Partner Meetings

Good evening. We just wanted to share upcoming NLCCC partner meetings. Please, come out and support our members.

K-TOWN Historic District Association Meeting

Many things have been and are happening in North Lawndale; the District should be and can be a part of it. Governmental and philanthropic organizations know of us now.
We have owner-occupied buildings without the resources for needed repairs, and new building owners displaying no interest in actually living here.
Are there grants to help with those repairs? Is there money available to attract new owner-occupancy with buyer incentives? KTHDA is a non-profit organization, which makes us eligible for grants that may help.
Tell your neighbors and friends. and join us this Thursday, June 23rd, 6:30 pm at Greater St. Paul AME Church, 4236 W Cermak Rd. Let’s explore our possibilities.

NLCCC Potential Funding Opportunities/ Upcoming Meetings and Events

Good afternoon, everyone. I just wanted to share a few important updates of which you should be aware.

Steering Committee Meeting with the Chicago Community Trust

The Steering Committee is in the process of setting up a meeting with the Chicago Community Trust to discuss the Benefit Chicago initiative, sponsored by the MacArthur Foundation, the Chicago Community Trust and the Calvert Foundation. This initiative will fund social enterprises. We will also discuss the range of products and services provided by the Chicago Community Trust, and the needs of our membership, as outlined on the North Lawndale Community Snapshot survey. We will keep you posted of the outcomes of the discussion.

Chicago Community Trust On the Table/Acting Up Awards Application Video

A number of our members participated in the Chicago Community Trust’s On the Table conversations on May 10th. The Trust will be providing fifty $1,000 grants to various participating groups to ensure that some of the ideas that were discussed to bring about community unity are implemented by the end of the year. Here is the video from the NLCCC application. If selected, we will use proceeds towards the first annual North Lawndale Arts Festival in Douglas Park, to be held August 6, 2016, from 10 am-7 pm. We should know the outcome of the competition the first part of July, 2016.

LISC Quality of Life Planning

NLCCC will be applying for LISC Quality of Life planning funds to strengthen our comprehensive planning process, currently under way with the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP). CMAP is currently facilitating the comprehensive planning process, with a focus on land use around housing, transportation, infrastructure, economic development, health care and arts and culture. If we are successful in securing this, we will use the funding to help us strengthen initiatives in those areas that are not being emphasized in the CMAP planning process, such as technology, education, public safety, workforce development and capacity building. We will submit our letter of intent by June 17, 2016, at 6:00 pm.

New Covenant CDC, the fiscal agent for the NLCCC comprehensive planning process, will also serve as the lead agency in this application. Lawndale Christian Development Corporation was the lead agency for the North Lawndale Quality of Life Plan completed in 2005. We thank Richard Townsell, Executive Director of LCDC, and the chairman of the NLCCC housing subcommittee, for supporting this effort.

Please let us know if you are interested in participating in this planning process. If so, we ask that you provide us your contact information so that we may include it as an attachment to our letter of intent to LISC. Ideally, we would also like you to include a letter of support as well. We will provide a model letter under separate cover to those agencies that have expressed an interest in participating.

Upcoming NLCCC Meetings

Please find attached a PDF file of our meetings flyer outlining the meeting schedule for NLCCC subcommittees, as well as a copy of our brochure. A link to the electronic application is found here.

Check Out NLCCC’s Acting Up Awards Application Video

Each year following On the Table, the Chicago Community Trust hears from excited and passionate community members about the conversations they had and the ways in which they want to make a difference on a local level. This year, the Trust will help ensure creative and actionable ideas raised during the discussions come to fruition.

To this end, the Chicago Community Trust has invited all individuals and organizations to submit a short video featuring their table’s idea of an actionable task to benefit your community. Some ideas included planting a community vegetable garden to buying school supplies for a classroom in need; cleaning up a local playground to supplying dinner for a week at a local soup kitchen. In essence – what could participants do with $1,000 to benefit their community?

On June 28, Chicago Community Trust will announce up to 50 On the Table participants who will receive a $1,000 Acting Up award to implement their idea. The charge is simply to encourage people to work together and take action for the public good.

Here is a copy of the NLCCC video submittal. Regardless of the outcome of the competition, we thoroughly enjoyed participating in several On the Table discussions on May 10th and have come back with a number of ideas that may be incorporated into our community planning process.

NLCCC Participates in On the Table

NLCCC members participated in several On The Table events on May 10, 2014. On the Table is an annual forum sponsored by the Chicago Community Trust, and is designed to elevate civic conversation, foster new relationships and create a unifying experience across the region. Thousands of Chicago-area residents gathered in small groups to share a meal and discuss the challenges and opportunities we face. These conversations have the potential to inspire new ways we can work together to make our communities stronger, safer and more dynamic.  Check out some of the #OntheTable pictures here.

Please Complete the North Lawndale Snapshot Survey

Thank you for participating in our survey. Your feedback is important.

As we have shared before, the North Lawndale Community Coordinating Council revitalizes the physical, economic and social fiber of the community through strategic and comprehensive planning, civic engagement and implementation of stakeholder-driven initiatives. We continually develop and execute bold community-driven solutions with the input of an engaged community that questions assumptions and challenges the status quo.

From time to time we engage funders in discussions about the issues that impact the North Lawndale community as a whole. In order to get behind the numbers that are so commonly quoted from the Census and other public sources, we are asking you to complete the following survey. The goal is to get a snapshot of the state of North Lawndale organizational stakeholders and to assess their needs. The high level results will be used to make the case for increased funding and investment activity in North Lawndale. If you complete the survey you will receive a copy of the summary and your own organization’s responses.

We will not reveal individual names of contacts or organizations in the summary. While we cannot guarantee that any one organization will be funded through our efforts, the summaries will help you to assess your own organization’s capacity within the context of the “universe” of organizations that respond to the survey. The results may be used for your own internal decision making process; to help inform your strategic planning process or to help you make the case for funding your organization’s capacity building efforts. Complete the survey here.  Please note that this is different from the North Lawndale.Metroquest survey, which focuses on the physical environment.

If you have any questions regarding this process, please contact

Valerie F. Leonard at consulting@valeriefleonard.com;
Dennis Deer at drdeer@deerehabilitationservices.com; or
Rodney Brown at rodney@new-covenantcdc.org.

NORTH LAWNDALE – WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!

What are the biggest challenges facing North Lawndale? How can we make North Lawndale a healthy, vibrant community?

The North Lawndale Community Coordinating Council (NLCCC) and the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) are collaborating to develop a neighborhood plan that establishes a unified vision for the North Lawndale community. All residents, business owners, community leaders, and other stakeholders from the community are invited to participate. Join us as we begin the process to create a new North Lawndale Neighborhood Plan.

A Community Planning Conference was held at DRW College Prep on Saturday, April 16, 2016 and we heard from over 300 of your friends, family, and neighbors! Now we are taking our search for ideas to the community at large. Please take the online survey at northlawndale.metroquest.com or visit the iPad kiosk during the months of May and June as it rotates to different locations throughout the neighborhood. The survey will be open through July 1, 2016.

Taking Our Electronic Communication to Another Level

We want to thank you so much for your support of NLCCC and for following our website and blog.  This website is a work in progress, and rather than doing the work behind an “Under Construction” page we decided to launch it and build it in plain view.  We are bringing content to broaden the sense of community.

The North Lawndale Connection

Our electronic newsletter will be branded “The North Lawndale Connection” to reinforce our role as a community coordinating body.

Community Bulletin Board

If you have announcements that you would like to share for our monthly newsletter, contact  Kimberly George at Kimberly.george@chicagoyouthcenters.org. If you have announcements that you’d like to go on our website, contact Rodney Brown at rodney@new-covenantcdc.org; Dennis Deer at drdeer@deerehabservices or                Valerie F. Leonard at consulting@valeriefleonard.com.

Community Hub

We are in the process of developing a community hub on the NLCCC website. There will be a page each for community-based organizations, businesses, institutions, elected officials, churches, city agencies, state agencies, county agencies, federal agencies. Those entities that are outside the North Lawndale community may be listed on a community partner page. Please let Dennis Deer, Rodney Brown or Valerie F. Leonard know if you would like to assist with this project.

Jobs Board

We thank Rodney Brown, who has volunteered to start a jobs page on our website. Given that the website is still under development, please allow 6-8 weeks before you see this in operation. We’re just priming the pump so you can start sharing that information in this forum and with Rodney.

These are a few example of some of the updates in the works. There are more where these came from, and we will keep you posted.

Hitting the “Reset” Button for North Lawndale

http://percolate.blogtalkradio.com/offsiteplayer?hostId=879089&episodeId=8749381

It has been over 50 years since North Lawndale has had a comprehensive plan that could be used to attract resources and guide public policy as it relates to transportation, utilities, land use, recreation, and housing.  As a result, much of the limited development that has occurred in recent years has not been coordinated or yielded maximum impact for the community as a whole. There are some pockets of North Lawndale that have seen significant development, while other parts have remained untouched since the 1950’s. In an effort to rectify this situation, the North Lawndale Community Coordinating Council (NLCCC) recently held its first annual community planning conference, in partnership with the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP), at the DRW College Prep High School on Chicago’s West Side.

Alderman Michael Scott, Jr., Rodney Brown and Dennis Deer will be guests on the Nonprofit “U” radio blog talk show on Monday, April 25 from 2:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.  Nonprofit “U” is an online forum where nonprofit stakeholders can discuss the latest developments in the sector and increase their capacity to serve their clients and build sustainable communities. Valerie F. Leonard, an expert in community and organizational development is the host. The show will stream live from BlogTalkRadio.com/nonprofit_u.  The archived podcast will be available on BlogTalkRadio, Valeriefleonard.com/NonprofitU, iTunes and Stitcher.

Alderman Scott, along with Brown, Deer and Leonard, members of the Executive Sub-Committee of the North Lawndale Community Coordinating Council, will recap the conference and share next steps for the community planning process. There will be opportunities for listeners to call in with questions and participate in live chats. Nonprofit professionals, educators and community stakeholders are especially encouraged to call in and share their stories. The live call in number is (347) 884-8121.
